The shining

The shining is based on the book written by Stephen King and was released within the UK on the 7th November 1980. It is a British-American psychological horror produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. Where a family move into a hotel for the winter however strange occurring's start to occur to members of the family; the young child 'Danny' starts to be contacted by spirits that live within the hotel whilst his father experiences a psychological possession which leads him to try to kill her wife and son but also appears to see the hotel within its prime when it first opened. The hotel appears to by cursed as previous families have all appeared to die.
(Idea for the film: The part where it shows the twins death and how they died, then goes back to them stood untouched almost pure again.)

When Danny meets the existing guest

Showing how the young girls have died

This will be interpreted within the establishing last scene of where sister Judith and her 'son' walk off into the distance or this idea could be represented with how throughout the film it will contain various flashbacks of Sister Judith's childhood then flashes back to the present day and situation I.e.  when sister Judith walks past one of the other sisters she sees another individual and then within a split second the sister reapers again.

The returned: idea for the film

Print screen from 'the returned'- thought it would work rather well as a film title?
The returned is a French supernatural drama television series created by Fabrice Gobert that was originally released on the 26th November 2012 in France. The show is featured on More4 within the UK and is currently on its second series which premiered on the 16th October 2015. The basic plot Is that many individuals who are deceased are returning to the small French mountain town. However a small cult in society are unable to accept that their 'loved' ones are returning, appearing to be almost human-like and are still the same age as to when they died. Therefore this cult reacts in a negative way by segregating them off and keeping them in harsh conditions to find out information on their death.
Due to the nature of the up coming film we are in the current making of. Which has a prominent theme of how a child's adornment  to a mother is what keeps the mother alive.

American Horror Story- Why is this a horror?

American horror story covern-

What shows this is a horror within the first look?

Costume- The black costumes immediately scream horror and darkness to the audience. This is because this colour is seen as a dark and depressing colour. Hence the fact it is worn at funerals. If the costumes of the girls within this were white or pink then it would immediately scream purity and innocence, something that the directors did not want.  Also the mask used within one of the shots is iconography for horror therefore the directors will have included this to put across to the audience that it is a horror film. Masks are a way of hiding who you really are and in the show the fact that the person who has a knife has a mask on could symbolize to the audience that they are wanting to remain hidden and reserved. This could suggest that they are the bad person within the show as appose to all the other characters.

Set and Mise-en-scene- The set used and the mise-en-scene is a very important aspect. We can see in parts of this first look that it is set in a big house. This belittles the characters to the house and makes them look smaller as appose to it. This can also symbolize wealth too, meaning that the girls who live in the house have got a lot of money. The house inside looks beautiful and everything is placed perfectly and in the right places- again showing that they very well may be posh.

Character- Each od the characters have got different characteristics to make them them. This is important to have in a film as it makes everyone different to one another and allows the director to show a variety of personalities and traits in each person.

Era- The way in which this show jumps from era to era is very important as it allows the director to include a variety of props, costumes and characteristics within it to set the scene. The big dresses and overdramatic hairstyles are important as they show that some of the scenes are set within an old era.

Cinematography- The shots used within the show is extremely important. A mix of long shots and close ups can show the significance of certain events and items. Also a stedicam is used on certain parts to make you feel as if you are in the characters shoes and it uses a POV shot to make you feel like this.
