Religious symbolism, Mies-en-scene and Purity

Religious symbolism and iconography will be used throughout the film in order to set the tone. This will help indicate many factors of the film. The religious symbols will help establish the feeling and set scenes.

Things such as habits for characters that are nuns and a priest costume. These outfits and the setting of the church will show that the main character has been taken in by the church without breaking the immersion by outright saying this is whats happened.

The use of religious symbols through out the film (or religious iconography?) Also helps set the scene and the mood. It will be as if you can not move without religious symbols dominating the scenes in the church. This will represent how under control the characters are by this religion.

For example in one scene Father Abraham is kneeling before a large picture of Jesus. In this scene low angle and high angle shots will be used in order to establish the dominance that religion plays on his life, this will be shown along side the dominance that he has over sister Judith's life. Further to this an extreme close up and of the picture and an eyeline match will be used.

American horror story: Influences into the character of sister Judith

American Horror Story season one establishing the characters within the first season 'murder house'

American horror story is an american anthology horror television series that was produced by  20th century fox television. The subsidiary ‘20th television’ released american horror story on the 5th october 2011 on the channel FX(USA). The show was ably received by television critics and fans mainly due to the pre established cast that were featured in ‘murder house’; Jessica Lange, Frances Conroy, and Evan Peters. Due to the success upon the first season AHS later released 5 more seasons and is already making a sixth season that will be released later on in 2016.

American horror story has sensational cast members that appear to star through out. Giving the series continuity. The occasional additional actor/actress also have been known to appear in each new season. In the various 5 seasons they have hired ‘Lady gaga’ , kathy bates(who has been in every season since season three), Denis O’hare, Chloe Sevigny and Matt Bomer. There has been a multinational appeal to the attraction that AHS has brought to both american and English television screens. As within 2011 AHS won IGN'S best TV award,  drama of the year, best direction in a drama series, bets music and best editing , best new title sequence and many others. Individual actors also won numerous awards i.e Jessica Lange won 'outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series'.

American horror has vastly influenced the film 'purity' mainly within characters personalities. Sister Judith is based on a variety of characters; Violet Harmon who is played by Taissa Farmiga. Tasissa's character within american horror story was rather timid around new members, tended to keep herself rather distant and was seen as an outcast within social environments. Violet's personal characteristics represent sister Judith before she came to the favourable help off Father Abraham and when she leaves and is found to be situated on the streets. This is to foreshow her vulnerability  and how she appears to be mentally dysfunctional. Then when sister Judith reforms herself her character starts to reflect that of Constance Langdon played by Jessica Lange. Her character is one that presents its self as someone who has a presence within any social situation and adores her child 'Addie Langdon' who suffers from Down Syndrome and dreams of one day becoming a 'pretty girl'. Her adorement for Addie is one that suffixes over any other relationship. She appears to place men first within her life and takes a vast amount of frustration out on her daughter, However when Addie dies the truth takes over Constance and you then see how her true devotion for Addie is one that is rooted deeply within her. This is a reflection of Sister Judiths bond with her 'child' Isaac.

Violet- highlighting her social exclusion and little self worth she believes she upholds

Constance- highlighting her characters ascendancy she upholds by the mid close up of her facial expressions.

Addie- Constance daughter. Who is foreshown as innocence, fragile and almost child like

Constance- giving Addie what she had always dreamed for 'to be a pretty girl'. Constance thought this was the way to give her little girl the dream she had always longed for

Addie- the death scene that highlighted how beauty is not everything. The one thing she always longed for had killed her. This scene revealed how sorrowful Constance felt

Potential filming locations

New Millerdam:
This is an ideal filming location for the beginning and end of the short film as the secluded nature of it will add character to and increase the fear factor of our film. Also, whilst we were formulating ideas for our film I instantly had New Millerdam in mind for the beginning and ending, it is the ideal place.

Emmanuel Methodist Church:
This is also an ideal filming location for the other part of the planned script due to the authenticity it would bring to our short film. Fortunately, one of our group members lives next door to someone involved with the church and is asking if we can film there.

List of shots and props

-Extreme Long shot establishing the scene (Just of SJ)
-Point Of View shot in a Canted angle (later edit in the cutting to black indicating the losing and regaining of consciousness. SJ's son is also in this to create intrigue and the audience guessing whether or not he is real)
-Extreme Close Up of SJ's eye, zooms into a graphic match that matches the key hole of the door that FA opens
-Low Angle shot of FA as it puts him in a domineering position
-Two shot of FA and SJ
-Shot Reverse Shot as dialogue takes place (culminates in him shouting SM to come and her to go in)
-Match And Action of SJ's feet walking in
-Close up of FA as he closes the door but pauses before with a look of intrigue
-Two shot to show the equal balance between SM+SJ.
-Shot-Reverse-Shot of them speaking (building up a rapport)
-ECU of SM sensually stroking SJ's leg/knee.
-Medium shot (behind FA) focus pull on SJ and SM (he is a blurred silhouette) then focus pull to FA and they are blurred.
-FA enters (High Angle) SM leaving, brisks past SJ after FA requests that she go and do an irrelevant chore. Abraham notices this interaction and a Medium shot at a slightly low angle demonstrates this.
-Close up of the calendar that is already a prop in the room (Liam's from home), dissolve, then have a new date (4 weeks later)
-Two shot of FA and SJ
-Shot-Reverse-Shot and dialogue (affectionate between them, he somewhat takes advantage of her vulnerable nature, but less so than between SJ+SM) (Knock at the door FA goes just as SM re-enters) (he goes to the door and you can hear the talking in the background faintly, reentry of SM)
- Mid Shot of SM walking in, match and action of her sitting down
-Two shot of SM and SJ (FA talking to someone outside)
---
-Close up of SM and SJ (Sister Mary said the charming from Father Abraham had happened to her but  she rejected him (has a nervous disposition about her whilst discussing this, could possibly use euphemistic language and talk in riddles with no clear objective to show how unnerved she continues to be over the incident)
-Deep focus of SJ, out of shot FA talking in a dominating tone
-Wide focus of both SJ and FA, dialogue and they walk over to the nunnery bedroom. (Low Angle)
-Cuts to the calendar in the corner (that was visible in the Low Angle), CU of the calendar, dissolve, visible change in time

- MLS behind FA (he is on his knees praying to a large mural of Jesus). Low angle close up (FA dialogue confessing to his bad nature, include in him saying that he cannot stop with her) whilst this happens it pans into an ECU of his eyes
- Close up of the calendar that is already a prop in the room (Liam's from home), dissolve, then have a new date (6 weeks later)
-LS (establishing a sunday mass room with people inside), FA drags a visibly pregnant SJ in, cuts to an eyeline match of FA whilst maintaining the LS, she is shown to be inferior and submissive next to him. Continous dialogue about 'everything that has touched her becomes corrupted' etc. Whilst the maintained LS of the room continues DEEP FOCUS is concentrated on SM and SJ, of whom she is helping escape out of the room.
-High Angle on the door SJ and SM runs around (Match and Action)
-Long Shot of them running down the corridor
-High Angle on another room as they come around the corner (Match and Action)
-Montage of packing with two shots and ECU of eyes (SM and SJ) and items
-High angle as they briskly walk back around the door (Match and Action), LS as they briskly walk down the corridor, CU tight embrace and dialogue between SM and SJ, opens door (Match and Action) Low Angle, embrace and say goodbye.

-Edit to indicate a fast forward in time (different setting to the lake and nunnery)
-Medium Long shot establishing the scene
-High Angle shot of SJ and her son both cowering with her becoming increasingly erratic, he tugs to her and looks increasingly for the love and support he needs (also dialogue of him talking to her and her not responding), she does not register his existence.
-Focus Pull on her (indicating he's dead), zooms into her eye and a graphic match into her son's eye and they're now back at the lake
-Point Of View shot in Canted angle (back to the very beginning), SJ holding her son's hand (camera looks down to it still in the POV then returns to the default POV) walks into the lake to a fade out

Locations.

I looked at different places to film and found quite a few ones that link well to our storyline. Due to needing a church we needed to find a church that would allow us to film inside it, my grandma lives next door to the owner of St Pauls Church therefore we can use this church to film inside for our film. Due to having the characters as nuns it is an important place to film at as it helps to portray the ideas of Christianity and religion.

Secondly tinkers pond is a good place to film and the magic pond close by there, this is because within our film water has a very important aspect and is a key theme to portray the idea or purity and freedom. Within this place there is a lot of trees what could portray to our audience that it is a horror. This is because woods and trees are important parts of horror. If we filmed near and within these then it could get the theme across that it is a horror and also convey danger. Therefore enabling our target audience to feel scared.

The age rating for the Purity (brief summary)

Through analysing over the BBFC rating website, i have therefore been able to come to a conclusion upon what the film rating for 'Purity' should be through the criteria that the BBFC offers for each age rating. The film purity should be classified as a '15'. This is due to that the film will reference to copulation; as Father Abraham and Sister Judith have many romantic encounters together which leads to sister Judith becoming pregnant. However within a 15, copulation can be portrayed just with little detail due to impressionable teens, who may take the scenes further and interpret it within other situations. Due to the film being set within an earlier period within history (1900) there may be the irregular occurrence of discriminative language towards the suggestive homosexual bond between Sister Mary who is infact secretly homosexual and Sister Judith. Additionally with the outburst of hidden abuse that was proclaimed to have taken place within Catholic grounds, the film 'purity' highlights this however within the terms of adult relationships (Father Abraham and Sister Judith). The BBFC states that 'The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour, although there may be racist, homophobic or other discriminatory themes and language'. Therefore again suggesting why 'purity' would be classified as a '15'.

Gaming and the horror aspects within it- Outlast.

Gaming

Although films present horror in a good way we are forgetting that horror is presented on lots of different platforms. To fully understand the idea of horror and what it takes to make something scary I decided to not only look at films but look at games and how they are made, looking at the mise-en-scene of these and how it is designed in order to make it look scarier.

Outlast

What is the story behind Outlast?
Outlast is a first-person survival horror video game developed and published by Canadian company Red Barrels. The game revolves around a freelance investigative journalist, Miles Upshur, who decides to investigate a remote psychiatric hospital situated deep in the mountains of Lake County, Colorado.

When did Outlast come out?
It was released on September 4, 2013 for Microsoft Windows and on February 4, 2014, for PlayStation 4. Gameplay[edit] Outlast is a first-person survival horror game set in an asylum.

What is the rating for Outlast?
Outlast centers around a story driven survival campaign told in first-person narrative and set in a dilapidated psychiatric hospital overrun by homicidal patients. Its presentation is similar to the found footage genre popularized in horror films.

Reviews

"This is major contributing factor in making the game so damn scary. No guns. No crowbars. Not even punching fists. All you can do is move, jump and hide. This is horror survival at its most minimal, and I love the way it makes you think – it’s all about stealth and avoidance. The lack of any kind of defensive safety blanket helps ratchet up the tension enormously. It’s a clever mechanism that makes everything feel a little more personal and high stakes because there is literally nothing between you and the enemy; a frightening prospect in of itself."

"All this adds up to a game where once you get going, you literally do jump at your own shadow. Which I think is another deliberate mechanism to put the chills in you. Outlast sets out to be a truly scary horror game, and it delivers on its promise very effectively."

"Something I really liked about Outlast is the way it messes with your head. A door that was open a moment ago when you passed it is suddenly closed when you turn around and look at it again. You might see something move ahead of you and go around a corner, but as you peek to see if it’s waiting for you, it’s not there. Where has it gone? And when is it going to jump out from somewhere unexpected?"

The mise en scene of this part of the game includes a lot of blood.

Research into relating films: 1)The haunting of Molly Hartley 2) silence of the lambs

Why does this particular film relate to the film 'PURITY'?

Back ground detail:

Released date: October 31st 2008, (Halloween) on 2,652 screens
Directed: Mickey Liddell
Production company: Liddell Entertainment
Distributed by: Freestyle Releasing
Budget: 5 million US dollars
Box office: 15.4 US dollars
Genre: American supernatural horror

One underlying key theme is mental health. The transition between Judith from child to adolescence is based drastically around pain, confusion, isolation and the hunger within her trying to be accepted by a numerous amount of individuals. Within the Film 'the haunting .. hartley'  it is based upon a young girl (17 years old) and her deranged mother who is placed within a mental institution,  due to the attack she places on her daughter( The mother is under the control of satan). However throughout the film, as a result her daughter begins to show signs of the same psychosis which controlled most of her mothers life. The hidden message within this particular film is how many individuals associate someone with a mental illness to be assumingly 'insane' and therefore needs to be institutionalised to 'control' them due to expressing behaviours that are not deemed within the 'norm' of society.

image of molly stabbing her daughter which leads her to be institutionalised, as she is deemed to have a mental illness- rather then having satan within her
The image portrays how a relationship can be tested through the power of a religion. The image is to show how the mother believes what she is doing is through the goodness of her heart and she is protecting her daughter from pain. Within the film Purity, Judith sees every situation through the eyes of her child and therefore her actions represent this simple but powerful fact.

The second film: silence of the lambs

Directed by: Jonathan Demme
Distributed by: Orion Pictures
Budget: $19 million
Box office: 272.7 million
Released date: 14 february 1994

The relationship between Clarice (jodie foster) and Hannibal Lecter is what fascinates me drastically about this film in particular. Moreover Both come from different ends of the law system which  allows the progress of the case to work at a fast pace; FBI agent - Serial killer. The bond that is created through these simple forefilling 'interviews' blossoms into a friendship were both seem to help and have a mutual respect for one another, however one could simply extend this fact and say its due to how Lecter's personality  is based upon dehumanising traits were there lies hidden tatics to gain what ever he deems as his and how he plays upon her weaknesses. What strikes me secondly is how a women is the one who conducts the interviews, is alone with the serial killer and how gender roles have been reversed. Prior research from a documentary i recently watched explained the reasoning behind how women were only placed in these conditions and that was due to the ratio of how many serial killers targeting females rather than males. Therefore women we used to in a theory seduce the serial killer in a professional manner allowing them to gain as much information out of the subject in question rather then allowing for equality within the law system.

Another factor that i found in the previous documentary was that Lecter was based upon a series of USA serial killers within the 1970s Hence why his killing spectrum had numerous of cross-over elements with previous cases. As the author; Thomas Harris,  in 1980 gained access to the FBI behavioural science Unit in Virginia. Due to the claim that a break through had been pioneered there, that would change the future in how some of the most dangerous criminals would be caught. Harris was firmly interested in the serial killers motives and their psychological makeup, leading onto the creation of 'Lecter'. This portrayed vastly well to the target audience as in 1992 Anthony Hopkins who plays Lector won the award for best actor. Connoting that the research that harris had driven out onto the new coined term within the 70s 'serial killer' was a large success. The film went onto also win; Academy award for; best acted screen play, best picture, best director , silver screen and numerous of other awards.

THE LINK: Within the film Purity we want the audience to feel the connection between father Abraham and Sister Judith. The way silence of the lambs has done with Lecter and Clarice. Even though they're from vastly different ends of the community and system they're with in, they still are able to share a rare and mutual connection with one another. That enables them to share information, which would  presumably not be shared with any other FBI agent. Primarily due to Lecters fascination with Clarice as he sees her driven passion for a just result and takes advantage of this.

Awards that silence of the lambs won

Posters in films- horror films compared to others.

Posters for films and how they can be presented differently.

Within this poster above the maker of it focused on a very important part of all horror movies, blood. Blood within films is a type of iconography and it was included within this poster to get across to the demographic that this film- if you hadn't guessed already- is a horror. Also the CGI that is used shows a face within the blood, this is done by a computer to enhance the idea that this film is scary. This is important that we include things like this in posters or advertisments as it automatically shows the audience the genre within a film. This film is clearly a horror film therefore the way in which they have added these items of iconography and CGI combined is very creative. Secondly aside of this the writing used on the poster is jet black. This is significant in horror films as the colour black represents darkness and horror, choosing this colour for the writing is important as it again represents horror. Also the font that is used is very bold and upfront, visible to see. This is important for the simple fact that the audience can clearly read it. Finally with the writing there is shadows behind and underneath it, this suggests darkness again and also the sense that someone could be following someone- much alike your shadow.

The poster for oculus is chilling on its own. The idea that the hands are on the woman face in the photo immediately screams horror to the audience. This is significant again as we are not even told that it is a horror. The line "You see what it wants you to see" is also very important as it is aiming the words directly at the audience, this can get them questioning and also scare them into wanting to know more. The hands on the eyes could however possibly be symbolism that the character behind the hands is blind to what is happening around her. Again a typical theme in horror- the unknown.

The posters used for this film are very important. This is because the children used within it are portrayed as innocent and scared. Within the first one we can see Lily hiding behind something, this can signify her youth and show how young she is. This can show to the audience that she is infact very scared of what is happening. I thought maybe if we incorporated shots like this one into our film then it would be very effective as it can portray the child in our film as innocent. Also the way in which the maker of this poster has shown her facial expressions and her paralinguistic features is very important. We are given the facial expression of a little girl who almost looks as if she is evil, this could forebord that she in this film has a twist of personality. Secondly the paralinguistic features she has is grabbing a hold of someone's arm, this could show us that she is scared and also shows us that in this film we are more than likely going to be grabbing a hold of someone's arm while watching- typical attribute of a horror film.

Within the poster above we can see a bunch of grown men doing stupid things. This is very typical of a comedy film. Within the poster the maker of it had included everyone's facial expressions to put the idea across that they are laughing- what you would do in a comedy film. Also the paralinguistic features that some contain, for example hands up in the air, show that they are having a funny or exciting time. Next the colour of the poster is bright and vibrant, this is important to take notice of because as appose to horrors we can immediately tell what kind of film it is just because of the choice of primary colours, red, blue etc.

Next within the next poster they have included the actors names in bold at the top of the page. This is because these actors are well known therefore doing this will increase the popularity of the film. Again the primary colour red is used as this is a bright colour that presents the film as a comedy as appose to a horror.  The writing on the poster is big and bold which is a common attribute to all comedy film posters, it shows the audience that it is going to be a fun film to watch. The costumes that the characters are wearing also represents that they are brothers as they are matching, this is seen as funny due to them being grown men. Finally the facial expressions that the both of them have are clueless, this could suggest that both of them are a bit dopey and stupid, again another common key theme within comedy films.

Finally in this last poster we again see a group of grown men doing something stupid. And again we see famous names at the top including Adam Sandler. The quote "boys will be boys... some longer than others" is important as it immediately shows us that this film will have comedy within it and scenes that will make you laugh out loud. Much alike the other two posters again primary colours are used on it to make us aware that it is not a horror film, not a documentary, it is a comedy film.

Ideas of Props/Costumes we may need to include.

Costume

For costume our group will need to find fancy dress shops that we can buy or rent a costume of a nun from. Two of our characters will be wearing this, I have researched a list of places where we can purchase these costumes from or if
we need to then we can make our own costumes by buying the right materials at a lower cost.

What really makes a Horror film a Horror?

So... What really makes a Horror film a Horror?

Horror movies play to our greatest fears and phobias. Which elements of horror movies scare us, and why?

1. Fear of Death.
This is the ultimate fear, both existentially and psychologically. It isn’t really a horror movie if people don’t get killed.

It is also referred to as thanatophobia (fear of death), and is distinguished from necrophobia, which is a specific fear of dead or dying persons and/or things (i.e. others who are dead or dying, not one's own death or dying).

2. The Dark.
From our earliest childhood we are afraid of the dark – not the dark itself, but what it hides. It makes horror movies even scarier to watch them in a darkened theater, or a dark living room, right?

When fear of the dark reaches a degree that is severe enough to be considered pathological, it is sometimes called achluophobia

3. Creepy, Crawly Things.
Snakes, spiders, rats, and other crawling things are scary in and of themselves, but when they touch the skin, in the dark, it amplifies this common phobia.

4. Scary Places.
Horror movies are full of scary places – graveyards, old houses, overgrown forests, dungeons, attics, basements. These are dark places, where evil things can hide.

5. Disfigurement.
Many horror movies feature grotesquely disfigured antagonists (think Frankenstein’s monster, the Phantom of the Opera, zombies). Studies in early development have found that young infants will react with fear to asymmetrical or disordered faces.

6. Dismemberment.
Fear of dismemberment involves loss of a part of the self. The popularity (and horror) of the Saw movies involves self-dismemberment as the only way to escape death.

7. Suspense (Anticipation and Expectations).
The best horror movies are full of suspense (think Alfred Hitchcock). Suspense involves creating anticipation that something bad will happen, but not knowing when it will occur. Some of the most shocking horror movie scenes, create anticipation, but then violate the audiences’ expectations (e.g., the hero gets killed; the killer is the one the audience least expects, etc..).

8. Spooky Music.
Music can create moods and elicit emotions. The music used in horror movies can be creepy, and can be used to accentuate the actions seen on the screen. Music intensifies feelings of suspense and shock.

9. Lightning and Thunder.
Many people are afraid of lightning and thunder – sudden flashes of light, that can kill, and a sudden and deafening sound that accompanies the lightening. Flashing lights and loud noises create a startle response and they are a mainstay of the horror film.

10. Fear of the Unusual.
We know that young children are often afraid of things that are different or unusual (such as a disfigured face), and highly unusual-looking things are often sources of fear. But a common theme in horror movies is to take something that is normally not scary (e.g., a doll, a child, a clown) and make it into a feared object. In other words, making the usual, unusual. This may explain the growing number of people who confess to a fear of clowns and dolls.

Title sequence analysis- Deadpool

The opening sequence of Dead Pool does clearly what opening titles are supposed to do. Give the feel of the film and set the tone without giving a lot of the story away. While the tone of this film is completely different to our own overall I think it works very well in doing what a title sequence is supposed to in its own respected genre.
The opening title of dead pool is a drawn out still shot of a car crash/fight scene shown slowly though different angles. This demonstrates several shots very well all while non diegetic music is playing. Juice Newton’s Angel of the Morning” is completely juxtaposed and contrapuntal to the scene however still fits well with the movie overall.
It’s clear that it’s a superhero movie as the Marvel logo is shown after flicks of comic strips are shown. Marvel Entertainment is a well-known comic book producer and is now a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company meaning that they have the rights to make movie’s on all of the characters within the Marvel Universe. As it shows the brand straight away you know that it’s going to be an action packed superhero movie.
The scene portrays well the violence on the movie as the first shot is a pullback shot from a cigarette lighter then to a man with his mouth open. You can clearly see glass and spit flying from his mouth. In a way it’s almost a reaction shot of him as you can see the pain and terror in the close up of his face.
As the shot continues to pull back and turn angles as more and more of the violence is shown. It illustrates close ups off really little things creating both humor and violence in the scene. Again due to the contrapuntal music playing it is done in a humors way but you can clearly see the violence that is going on. These shots are the scene panning further out panning across it and showing it from different angles.
Credits appear on screen in a comical way. Here is displays cliches of the super hero genre by stating “staring God’s perfect idiot”, “A hot chick”, “A British Villain” ect. These demonstrate who is in the movie without stating the actual actors. The movie’s star Ryan Reynolds is at once People’s 2010 “Sexiest Man Alive” in a way breaking the 4th wall.  This again portrays the humor of the movie. In some ways it makes a joke out of the whole proceedings of the movie by making fun of the writers and the directors ect.
There are several things that are out of place in the scene. A Hello Kitty lip gloss is shown right after a shot of a hand breaking through the glass of the car. This demonstrates the character well.

Right next to it Deadpool is shown with a character crashing into him nose first into his butt but at the same time his fingers in the eyes off another ‘villain’ and later him wedging a further person.

In the end it pans out completely to show the scene of the car crash but then to a childlike violent on fire drawing of deadpool stabbing someone opening it up the his 4th wall breaking narration. Side by side throughout it shows humour and violence hand in hand. This shows what’s to come in the movie.
