Mise-en-scene in our film.

Mise en scene and Cinematography in our film.

Mise-en scene- When applied to the cinema, mise-en-scène refers to everything that appears before the camera and its arrangement—composition, sets, props, actors, costumes, and lighting.

Within our film mise-en-scene is a very important aspect. To put across the sense that it is a horror film we will need to use things such as low key lighting, chiaroscuro and shadows. Firstly if we choose to do low key lighting within the film it will alter how our audience see it. In this case low key lighting

A good example would be the costumes used for characters. Within American Horror Story Freakshow the clown is percieved as scary due to the makeup that he wears. As appose to the nicer looking clown Twisy has got darker shades of makeup which present him as a lot more scary. The clown below him has got more bright and saturated colours that are primary colours- well known to the audience and viewers. The lower clowns face is white which symbolises innocence or purity, this reassures the audience that the lower clown is not to be afraid of. Wheras the clown above has shadows and contouring to shape the face. The mouth is a very important part in these characters costume as the shape of their mouths are either round or pointy. Points and sharp edges symbolize danger therefore it is an important aspect in showing that Twisty the clown is a bad character.
