A title sequence can contain any number of titles, sometimes just including the title and director, or other times involving down to such roles as make-up artist and location photographer.
Coraline Film Title Sequence Analysis-
The way that the title of the film at first is written is very creative as it fore boards to the audience that there will be some sort of sewing or buttons within the film. The colours that are used are very plain and boring, black brown and white. This is used to give the film an outlook that it is going to be a horror film as bright, vibrant and primary colours are not used within. Bright colours generally symbolize good things therefore the fact that even before the film starts it is dull represents that it will be a horror.
Within this next shot a typical horror convention is used- dolls. Dolls in horror are seen as freaky, especially with buttons for eyes. The green hue that is used over the scenes makes it have a scary feel to it and sets the atmosphere. Within this mise-en-scene objects like scissors and sharp items are used to symbolize danger. This may have again been done to portray the horror theme in a unique way. Secondly the doll that is within the shot is a typical item you would find in horror. However the cinematography used on it makes it look innocent. The high angle shot and POV shot shows that it I inferior to the person above it, this reassures the audience a little and also shows that the doll may not be bad after all. The POV shot is very important as we do not know who it is from, this makes us have lots of questions and makes us carry on watching in the hope we can find out who it is.
Within this next shot we are given a close up of the dolls face and her eyes being removed. Again, this symbolizes her innocence and that someone is superior to her. The removing of her eyes could metaphorically show that someone is blinding her to something or maybe changing what she looks like to fit in. Even though buttons are not seen as every day scary things- we find them on coats, jackets, shirts- the film portrays them as scary. This may have been done to prepare the audience that every day things and items could sometimes turn into your worst nightmare.
Again in this next shot the same thing is done. Could the starting sequence be fore boarding something? The close up of the dolls mouth could symbolize that in the film something happens with someone's freedom of speech. This is a very creative but creepy way in which the director of this film plays on animation to fore board events to the audience. This shot is slightly closer than the previous one so this could symbolize its importance within the film. Once again the green hue is used to show danger.
Within the next shot the mise-en-scene is again represented as scary. The sharp objects surrounding the doll symbolize danger and fore boards that something bad is going to happen. Again the writer may have done this to put the audience on edge and make them anticipate about what will happen next. The long shot of the dolls body is significant here as the paralinguistic features that it has are very relaxed and willing. This shows that someone is controlling the doll from the way it is laid. The POV shot also included is creative as it allows us to see whatever the 'thing' can see and putting us in their position. This scares the audience because it is not a position they want to be allocated however in horror there is no choice- that's what makes it scary.
Finally within this last shot the doll is fully complete and how the person wants it. The primary colours blue and yellow are used on the hair and coat. This symbolizes hope and happiness. Maybe the 'thing' that is making this doll is not bad after all. The completed doll also represents being proud. The POV shot shows how the doll is being held, completely different to at the beginning it is being handled with care. This symbolizes its importance and fore boards to the demographic that she in actual fact is a big part of this film.
